Suggestions please...

by LandersUK @ 2007-11-08 - 20:21:10

Below are the current Bloscars categories. You'll see some of them have gone from last years awards and there is currently two new catagoeis - Best Newcomer and Best Off-Site Blog. I'll explain more about how bloggers qualify to be nominated for those two catagories when all the catagories are confimred but now it's over to you.

What categories would you like to see? Please leave all suggestions as a comment.

What about having both a male & female category for the best newcomer award?

Yes I like that. I shall add that.

I;d like to see 'Best Blog With The Word Boat In The Title. And Possibly Row. And Maybe The Could Be In There As Well. But Don't Forget Those Words Could Be In A Different Order.'

*ahem*

It would be rather a long title to fit on the certificate.

Of course that's my only issue with it.

I don't think it would be too popular.

I officially withdraw myself from any running this year.

Just so you know.

If you're sure.

I am, Paddy.

Be interesting to sit and watch what happens, though.

Anything I can to do help, I will.

(Of course you do, Juzzzy).

Can I suggest that we clean up the categories that overlap? I would recommend combining things like 'Funniest Blog' and 'Funniest Blogger' into a simple 'Funniest Blog' category (it seems to me that if someone's a funny blogger, they really only get to demonstrate that to us through their blog anyway). This would also help with the voting - I remember being a bit confused by discrepancies like that last year.

I think the same is true of the 'Best Blog' award which is already covered in 'Best Male Blog(ger)' and 'Best Female Blog(ger)' - again, if I am voting for someone to be best male or best female it stands to reason that I think their blog is the best. (And currently I would have to chose between the male and female for the Best Blog title).

I think it's confusing to have to distinguish between bloggers and blogs, so I would suggest keeping the categories limited to the blogs rather than the people that write them (as we can really only judge each other through the blogs anyway) - with the exception of Most Helpful Blogger which is all about a particular person and how they might have helped you in the land of blog. My amendments to the list would leave the following:

Best New Male Blog
Best New Female Blog
Funniest Blog
Most Inspirational Blog
Best Male Blog
Best Female Blog
Best Blog Commenter
Best Blog Design
Best Off-site Blog
Lasiest Blogger
Best Profile Tags
Best News Blog
Best Story Blog
Best You Tube/Google Video Blogger
Best Profile Picture
Most Artistic Blog
Most Helpful Blogger * (for an individual rather than their blog)
The Moira Smith Forget-Me-Not Award

Just a suggestion.

Believe it or not, I do.

I'm happy to vote for other people and actively support The Bloscars - and I will - but I'd rather do just that this time around.

I like your thinking and agree with you to a point because of something someone else said last year.

One of the things I talked about last year was merging some of the categories and when I suggested merging funniest blogger and funniest blog someone said that just because they found a blogger funny it didn't mean their blog was the funniest. They found the blogger funny because of comments they'd left or pictures/jokes they'd posted but they'd found funnier regular blogs that just blogged jokes every day rather than now and then.

How about this year, for that category I allow people to vote for a blog or a blogger? This is the same as what I was planning for Most Helpful and Most Inspirational when I put the slash between blog and blogger. People can vote for a blogger they've found helpful or inspirational OR they can vote for a blog they've found helpful of inspirational.

Can you think of any other awards? What about the Moira Smith Award? With that one I'm going to do the same as last year where people can only nominate ONE person for that rather than the three but what would you say merits a nomination for that award?

I've added a Best Off-Site Bog award.... do you think there should be a Best Webs-site Award or should I just leave it to things connected with blogging?

Cheers for your comments, all and more welcome.

Yes,

That sounds like a good idea - allowing people to vote either for a person or a blog in some of those overlapping categories will clear up the confusion and still result in a single award being given for what was once two similar awards.

I think Moira's award should be the 'most inspirational blog or blogger' award - that's certainly what I think of when I remember Moira, and we have so many new faces here on blog.co now that it would be a useful reminder for us as a community to recall that she was (and remains) an inspiration to us first and foremost. I would call it the Moira Smith Award for Most Inspirational Blog or Blogger (or keep the 'forget-me-not' reference in there too if you'd like, though I think it sounds classier without). And yes - 'open' nominations for that one as last year, one vote per person.

I like the idea of the off-site blog award (even if it's freaky to think that there is an 'off-site' out there) and also of a 'best web site award' too. However, I think we should keep everything related to blog.co - so to qualify for nomination the off-site blog must have some affiliation to blog.co or to one of the bloggers (maybe its their work's blog, or maybe they syndicate their blog to other sites too) and similarly to qualify for the 'web site award' the web site must be either run by a blogger, or have content that features heavily in a blogger's posts (and we'll have to be careful to word it so that it's not an award for service providers like YouTube whose players feature on lots of blogs, though who themselves provide no actual content).

You're right to keep the connection to blogging in all things, though.

Yes, I like that idea of linking the off-site blogs and web-sites to on-site bloggers. As for the You Tube thing I think that wouldn't be eligible for a nomination anyway as it's not run by a blogger from this site... as far as I know!

The name for the Moira Smith Award was sorted out between me, LJ and Moira's husband. He requested that the name of the charity be used in the name of the award (I think he did anyway... my memory is terrible!) and I respect that.

I know what you mean when you say that Moira's award makes you think of the most inspirational blogger but I have a thing about that award so it stays LOL.

Most inventive blogger? (I think this could be quite competitive!)
Most prolific blogger?

Hmm... Inventive in what way?

How do you mean prolific? The blogger who blogs the most? The blogger who is online the most? I like the idea but I'm not sure it would work. Can you expand in on it all?

I'm not sure this makes sense but thinking Bloscars/Oscars what about something similar to a Life Time Achievement Award? I'm thinking for bloggers who've been here forever and make so much effort to post/comment daily. Those who might not be best or funniest but deserve recognition for their sheer perseverance. James.

Hi Again! Scrub the words Life Time, etc. Bad idea! What about Most Dedicated Blogger? Same reasoning, consistent commitment, contrasting neatly with Laziest. Possibly. James.

I've got itchy fingers again.

Damn.

How about the sexiest blog? and one for the youngsters:
The best under 18 blog,

I think you should keep the category of blogger one would most like to meet personally as well.

Best photographer? ;):))

Have we made it clear that winners of The Moira Smith Forget-me-not award are not eligible to be entered again? As this is the equivalant to the Lifetime achievment you can only have it once?
